The Man Who Waited
On September 26, 1983, a computer told Stanislav Petrov to start a nuclear war. He said no.
The Soviet early warning system detected five American missiles heading toward the USSR. Protocol was clear: report the attack immediately. The military would launch a counterstrike. Petrov had minutes to decide.
He didn't follow the procedure. He questioned it.
The satellites showed missiles, but something felt wrong. Why only five missiles? If America was attacking, wouldn't they launch hundreds? Petrov knew the system was new. He knew detection technology had limitations. He understood context the computer couldn't see.
